maylene***
Maylene uses Fighting-type Pokémon in her battles. Trainers who defeat her receive the Cobble Badge, TM60 (Drain Punch) and are able to use Fly outside of battle. Maylene is considered a cute little girl, but adults in the town respect her for her power. Maylene's father gambles at the Veilstone Game Corner. Maylene apparently doesn't know her own strength, as she's totally unsure of how she got to be Gym Leader, and seems rather confused by the whole thing.
Later in Platinum, the player encounters her upon entering Route 217 where she is apparently training by walking to Snowpoint City. She doesn't use Fly—even if she could—so she could train herself. She is also used to the cold, even if she is lightly dressed and barefoot. In Snowpoint's Pokémon Center, she says that she admires Candice for being so studious and that she'll see her later. Later in the game, she can appear at the Battleground, where she and the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders and Trainers can be battled again. After battling her here, she mentions that she believes that being barefoot is healthier than wearing footwear, pointing out that Pokémon go barefoot. Apparently, she also seems to like to eat, saying how it is so great how she can eat all she wants at the Battleground or how she appears in Celadon City in HeartGold and SoulSilver and has entered, as well as currently winning, what appears to be an eating contest.

Trivia
* Maylene is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl to not appear outside her gym at least once in the game. She makes several appearances outside of her Gym in Pokémon Platinum, however, when the player reaches Route 217, at the Pokémon Center in Snowpoint City before beating Candice, and at the Battleground.
* Maylene's Japanese name is shared with that of one of the Kimono Girls of Ecruteak City. Though that Kimono Girl's name was changed to Komomo in HeartGold and SoulSilver, possibly not to conflict with Maylene's Japanese name.
* Maylene is one of the youngest Gym Leaders in Sinnoh. However, the youngest Gym Leaders in the Pokémon world seem to hail from Hoenn, being the twins from Mossdeep City, Tate and Liza.
* With the release of Pokémon Platinum, the order of three Gym battles in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are now shifted: instead of being third, Maylene is now fourth in the line-up. Had Ash fought Fantina previous to Maylene, he would have inadvertently gone out of order compared to the Diamond and Pearl line-up, but in order for the Platinum line-up. Ash battled the three shifted Gym Leaders in the order designated by Diamond and Pearl, as Platinum was not released until after Ash fought Crasher Wake, but before Fantina.
* She is also the only Gym Leader in Sinnoh to have more Pokémon of the opposite gender than of the same gender as her; in the Veilstone Gym, two out of her three Pokémon are male, while at the Battleground, three out of five are.
* Maylene is the only Sinnoh Gym leader as of yet to have not lost to Ash at least once.
* To date, she is the only female Gym Leader that specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon.
* Of all of the trainers that can be fought at the Battleground, Maylene has the strongest Pokémon of any of them. Her Lucario at, Lv. 66, is one level stronger than the rest of the trainers' strongest Pokémon, as all of the rest are at Lv. 65.
